Just finished a journey across China (May 2026), revisiting many cities I had not seen in years. I was completely amazed by the transformation that has taken place. Much of the change feels extraordinary. Chinese cities have become livable and pleasant — cleaner air and quiet streets (no honking!!!) due an impressive shift toward electric vehicles that has dramatically changed the atmosphere of urban life. Not everything feels positive. Domestic tourism has grown enormously, and managing the overwhelming number of visitors has changed many places that once felt accessible and intimate. Areas that were once peaceful for local residents are now crowded with tourists dressed in period costumes, posing endlessly for photographs.Still, more than anything, I came away deeply impressed by what China has become.
